Something on 'Gender'ing.

Mummy ki Roti gol gol 

Papa ka Paisa gol gol 

(Mummy's Roti is round round  as is Papa's money) 

while this popular Hindi nursery rhyme explaining the concept of a circle seems harmless it subtly  reinforces deep rooted gender stereotypes and exemplifies the gendering that occurs throughout India's classroom.

After reading these kind of rhymes a kid unconsciously cement the fact that to make food is not his work at all and kitchens are 'just' meant for women. 

What we eat is our basic need and does this need gender division?

Historically women cooks the food because of her sheer nature of nurture , to take care of  the family which is there in her by birth.

But progressively when we are developing we see women going for job but still kitchen is left only and only for her. 

Instead of challenging the typical tropes of masculinity and femininity Indian curricular and textbook chronically under represent women showing mostly men at workplaces and introduced gendered standards of intelligence, beauty, strength and skill to impressionable students. 

It is high time to inculcate more egalitarian norms behaviours and attitude such as those around gender.

 With strategic changes to teaching materials and curriculum the classroom can be a venue to directly address gender biased perceptions and instill gender equality attitudes and behaviour it is our duty to normalise progressive gender attitudes and behaviours among adolescents in schools can serve as potential platform for change.

While calls to integrate gender sensitive content at all school levels is an important first step empowering adolescence and improving teacher training can potentially be a gateway to lasting gender equitable behaviour policymakers across India must take similar action to utilise the classroom as a site for promoting gender intrusion and equality and building a world that is free from gender discrimination.

It all starts in our classroom, in our homes.
